The choice to go off meal plan sophomore year has been taken away from Brown students.

There are countless downsides to meal plan and instead of rectifying these, Brown has chosen to force students into paying almost $6,000 for subpar offerings. This is enough to eat at a restaurant for every meal, and maybe even double what a student would spend on food otherwise.

Limited dining hours, unhealthy food and lack of options, few accommodations, overpriced goods in the Campus Market and elsewhere, hourly limits, an $8.20 meal value and loss of change, nearby supermarkets, questionable preparation, lack of convenience, no economical smaller meal plans, general financial stress, and the need for personal freedom are all issues with Brown’s meal plan. This affects our health, which should be our first and foremost priority. This is a personal issue, not something Brown can rectify with a blanket requirement. This requirement does not serve to help anyone.

Brown’s survey doesn’t represent students’ actual needs, and this has been vocalized by many. No one supports this requirement, except for the administration itself.

If there is nothing we can do to fight against this, what keeps Brown from going further?
