Violence against women is an enormous problem that affects women and girls globally all around the world. In addition to it being a global health crisis and a human rights violation among many other things; it is a grave moral outrage that knows no geographic or cultural barriers.
Last month, American rapper (The) Game held a concert in Adelaide, Australia when a young female fan on stage got repeatedly groped by men in the rapper’s entourage while he yells to the girl to, “show off your titties.” When the woman is unwilling to flash the crowd, one man grabs the woman’s breasts, and another tries to pull off her top (see embedded video). The woman is able to keep her clothes on and when it becomes apparent she won’t get naked, she’s pushed off stage while The Game tells her, “You shouldn’t have brought your ass on stage.” (Clutch Magazine).
This incident has received wide media attention both in Australia and elsewhere. Game who has nonchalantly responded to the incident has shown no remorse for his action reinforcing the notion that victims “should have known better” than to get assaulted in the first place. In addition to this incident, there is footage of him spitting on some female fans a few days earlier.
With tomorrow (March 8) being the International Women’s Day it is important that people, men and women, are united in the fight against these kinds of disgusting behavior. Public figures (particularly those who serve as roles models for others) must just like everybody else who encourages, supports and acts in any assult against women, be held accountable for their actions!
