"Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future", the Supreme court bench quoted Oscar Wilde while commuting the death sentence awarded to a man convicted of rape and murder of a 4 year old girl. Perhaps the honorable court has forgotten the public outrage over the infamous Nirbhaya gang rape case where people of this country made it known that they wouldn't settle for anything less than death penalty for her offenders. There were numerous candle light marches and processions accompanied by demands of setting a strong precedent to avoid repetitions of such horrific and brutal crimes against women. A case was also made to ensure death penalty for the rapists, though it did not go through.

By commuting the death sentence of the offender to 20 years, the Supreme Court has, inadvertently, sent all the wrong signals. It is a message that in future, the perpetrators of heinous crimes against woman can, and will get away with their horrific crimes. If the rape and murder of a 4 year old girl doesn't deserve a death sentence, I don't know what does.
