Oak Brook Residents Must Attend Hinsdale Central High School Only

Our community is facing a threat to our kids' education. Hinsdale Central is overcrowded while Hinsdale South has available capacity. Hinsdale Township High School District 86 Board of Education may vote on a proposal of combining Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South and making grade centers, and another that creates boundary lines that would send Oak Brook kids to Hinsdale South. Please REJECT those 2 proposals.
PLEASE REJECT the proposal of changing any boundary lines that would send Oak Brook kids to Hinsdale South OR combining Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South and making grade centers
Sending kids in the northern-most part of the district to the southern-most school is ludicrous and a logistic nightmare. With kids in after-school activities and a 5:30 pm (rush hour) pick up, it can take up to 40 minutes to travel down 83 for pick up.
During our most recent elections, when we voted for the school board, we trusted their judgement to protect all of us constituents, and the future of our kids. We made major life decisions to move to our beautiful Oak Brook Village, we put our hard work and hard-earned dollars to build our homes and move our families here, all based on high school attendance. We take pride that Hinsdale Central was ranked seventh in Illinois. We supported Central with anything and everything we could, not only with our tax dollars but also with our time and volunteer work. Pulling a bait-and-switch and sending Oak Brook to South would be disingenuous and a betrayal of public trust. We still have FULL FAITH in our board of education and we trust that they will make the right decision to protect our interests.
Combining schools to create grade centers is even a more despicable idea.
Creating a mammoth school is a concept that will undoubtedly lead to one outcome: failure!
As it currently stands, making a sport, or activity is challenging and competitive. Under this proposal, the kids would have to compete against double the amount of people to make a varsity (or freshman, sophomore, or JV) sports team. Clubs like Mock Trial, math team, yearbook, or newspaper, would be overrun with kids - and many kids would be unable to "make" any of their desired activities.
More importantly, curriculum options will be severely limited. A sophomore that needs to take a junior class would waste time commuting back and forth, if that was even an option.
Can you put a price on that inability to participate? Could it lead to more troubled teens who feel disconnected and ostracized from their school?
In addition, creating grade centers would still necessitate expensive improvements and expansions to both schools. How is this an improvement over expensive improvements that the schools need, if kept as independent schools?
Please do NOT fold to a fringe group of residents that are loudly demanding to "Fill South First." The fact of the matter is that Central and South families and students love their schools and would hate to see school pride, culture, and history erased by combining to create grade centers. These are two great schools; allow them to thrive as independent schools. Right now, Central's crumbling infrastructure necessitates more improvements. When South needs more improvements, we should provide them the resources. Let's take care of both schools, as needed.
PLEASE deliberate and give this critical issue some of your very valuable time. It took us a long time to get here, how to proceed deserves deliberation and thought.
PLEASE think about our kids’ future, about our community and our homes values. Such potential decisions by the board will be detrimental to Oak Brook families and kids for generations to come.
