Problem
The current policy requires a University employee to use their sick leave and annual leave to donate an organ. I feel that this penalizes the potential donor who will most likely be required to use all their accumulated leave in order to donate and recover from surgery. Over 95,000 people are currently waiting for a kidney donor in the USA and my daughter is one of these people. Living donations generally have a higher success rate and I believe more people would consider donating if they were not penalized by the loss of their leave balances.

Solution
Offer people willing to donate an organ or bone marrow additional days that is not related to their personally accurred leave balances. This could be similar to the sick bank currently offered by the university where people could “donate” their sick time to a bank that people who choose to donate could pull from.

Personal story
My daughter has a rare disease which resulted in the loss of her kidneys. She received her first transplant at 17 which failed at 21. She now needs a 2nd transplant. I am not a match for my daughter but I am being tested as a potential “swap” for her. While looking at how my donation will affect our financial status I discovered that the University of Tennessee has no policy.
