It's time to end the prohibition of cannabis. A simple Google search can render users a plethora of scientific (and some not-so-scientific), and statistical evidence proving marijuana is safer than alcohol or tobacco. Both of these highly addictive substances are heavily taxed and regulated by our government and generate mounds of revenue. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 3.3 million deaths globally were attributed to alcohol consumption in 2015 alone. Why can i go to my local walmart and purchase a substance that killed 3 million people in one year, but be imprisoned for up to 10 years for growing a plant in my backyard that will probably just make me run to the corner gas station for a bag of doritos? ENTER SENATE BILL 76!! THE CANNABIS FREEDOM ACT
Senator Perry Clark of Louisville filed legislation in January 2017 that would legalize the possession and use of limited amounts of marijuana for those over the age of 21. The following is an excerpt from NORML.org
"SB 76, the Cannabis Freedom Act, allows adults to possess up to one ounce of cannabis, to cultivate up to five cannabis plants, to store excess cannabis lawfully grown for personal use at the location where it was cultivated; and to transfer up to one ounce of cannabis to another person age 21 or older without remuneration.
Eight states, encompassing some 20 percent of the US population, have enacted similar adult use regulations."
Legalizing marijuana in Kentucky will untap the same benefits received by those states who have done it before us...
- 10% or greater drop in crime rates
- massive tax revenue for schools, infrastructure, and local governments
- New research studies conducted to realize the amazing health benefits of the plant
- tens of thousands of new jobs as the industry needs growers, cultivators, sellers, researchers, regulation enforcement, security
- No more heinous incarcerations for marijuana possession saving the state millions by not having to house more inmates
- drop in prescription drug abuse
Please sign and share this petition anywhere and everywhere you can and let's encourage our state elected officials to do the right thing and stop criminalizing cannabis!
Below is a link to the actual legislation if anyone would like to read it. I will also include a summary!
