Looking at the changing lifestyle of urban India, I feel it has become necessary to include social and emotional learning as a subject in the syllabus of Schools and colleges to ensure overall grooming of the new generation. The data shows that 24% of Indians between 15 to 29 years of age are suffering from depression. Stress is leading our youths to towards addiction, anti-social behavior and ultimately suicides. It is also important to create emotionally intelligent teachers to tackle the emotional quotient of kids. What is SEL? Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Why SEL learning for kids? SEL helps build a foundation that supports students’ success both personally and academically. When kids are equipped with social-emotional skills, they’re better able to learn and contribute to a positive school climate. Benefits of SEL learning in kids: · Less emotional distress · Fewer disciplinary incidents · Improved test scores and grades · Social-emotional learning helps kids work on things like coping with feelings and setting goals. · It also helps with interpersonal skills like working in teams and resolving conflicts. · In schools, an emphasis on social-emotional learning can help reduce bullying and disciplinary incidents. Children thrive. Schools win. Workplaces benefit. Society strengthens. All due to social-emotional learning.
