With the rise of food delivery services, we often order food from restaurants from the comfort of our homes. However, it is sad to see that many of them charge some money for packing charges. I think that is unfair and here is why.

If a restaurant charges a packing fee, it should also offer a discount for the following:

  1. Man hours saved in attending to the customer if he would be at the restaurant
  2. Direct expenses saved - detergent for washing the utensils he would use, tissue paper, cutlery usage, table occupancy etc. All these expenses are saved which the restaurant can spend on another customer.
  3. Indirect expenses saved - electricity costs, rent costs. The customer does not use any of these when ordering food from home.

Further, packing is a necessity in order to deliver food. Charging a packing fee is like charging a plate and glass rental when you have an in-store customer. It is, therefore, an illogical and unethical business practice that should be banned with immediate effect.
