Juneteenth via Wendell Lundy
Independence day is a negligent holiday in that it fails to acknowledge the fact that there were millions of Americans who were deprived of their freedom beyond July 4, 1776. It would be nearly a full century before Americans of African descent would be granted the liberty that has become America's clarion call. June 19, 1865 marks the day when all Americans became free and independent members of this great nation. As such, Juneteenth deserves equal footing with Independence Day as an American holiday.
It is only fitting that the movement to make Juneteenth a federal holiday should start here in the state of Virginia being that it is the birthplace of slavery in America. In addition, there is no better moment than this one in which we commemorate the 400 year anniversary of the arrival of the first African slaves at Point Comfort in Hampton, VA. If we can celebrate the arrival of the first African slaves, then how much more so should we commemorate the freeing of the last of the African American slaves on June 19, 1865—a day we affectionately know as Juneteenth. It is in this spirit that we petition the Commonwealth of Virginia to acknowledge Juneteenth as a state holiday with all of the honor and standing duly given to Independence Day.
