Anna Quayle started this petition to Governor Ralph S. Northam

Please sign this petition urging Virginia governor, Ralph Northam, to allow Alcoholics Anonymous(AA) clubs to remain open during this COVID19 pandemic under the provision that AA be considered an "essential social service" in accordance with Executive order #55. https://www.governor.virginia.gov/media/governorvirginiagov/executive-actions/EO-55-Temporary-Stay-at-Home-Order-Due-to-Novel-Coronavirus-(COVID-19).pdf

The value AA clubs bring to the alcoholic community and its welfare are ESSENTIAL to those working the program. As such, they should be allowed to remain open for those who need its services, particularly those new to sobriety, such as myself, who are in most danger of relapse. Alcoholism and other addictions are diseases aggravated by isolation which is why being able to continue AA meetings is absolutely imperative during COVID 19. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/science-choice/201411/addiction-disease-isolation

Under recent Executive Order #53 the Governor of Virginia lists "public and private social clubs" as non-essential businesses that must close during this pandemic. Because AA meeting clubs fall under this category all clubs have been shut down. Conversely, liquor stores are listed as essential businesses. This very real threat to alcoholic's sobriety is stronger than any other time in recent history, including after 9/11 where AA meetings still continued despite the tragedy.

If this request is approved by the Governor, AA clubs will be required to follow the social distancing mandate of spacing 6 feet apart. However, this petition also seeks to lift the requirement set up in Executive Order 53 limiting gatherings to no more than 10 people specifically for AA clubs. This petition asks that, if, and only if, it is possible to fit more than 10 people in a meeting space while at the same time maintaining 6 feet of social distancing, AA clubs should be allowed to do so. This provision will allow the maximum number of people suffering from alcoholism to take advantage of the assistance AA provides, while not neglecting public health.
