Virginia Teachers started this petition to Governor Ralph S. Northam

This past January, Virginia gov. Ralph S. Northam floated the idea of extending the school year through the summer for the 2021-2022 school year in hopes to bridge the achievement gap caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic and extending our current school year into the summer for an undetermined amount of days. This plan, as he stated, was to be discussed with district superintendents, to recieve input from their school systems as to whether this plan was equitable, feasible, and worthwhile.

Teachers, meanwhile, recieved no chance to provide feedback; nor did faculty, support staff, or any other participating member of the Virginia's Education system get offered a chance to participate in the discussion. Instead, Ralph Northam has continued to push the idea in future press conferences, further solidifying this idea as a possibility- still with no chance for teachers to provide feedback.

While we understand that parents and students have struggled to maintain a high standard in their learning from home; teachers have fought and sacrificed as much as we possibly can to ensure that the system did not fail entirely. The proposed plan however, speaks of nothing of how teachers will be supported or compensated, and uses outdated language to describe students' "achievement" during a global pandemic.

This petition does not demand that Northam reverse a decision. This petition demands that teachers and faculty are present before the decision is made, and we are allowed to make our voices heard. We have been grossly misinformed throughout the pandemic, or watch as our administration flutters as new information is forced through as quickly as possible only to change at the last second-- and reasonably so-- and we have dealt with that "fluid" nature of the pandemic response thus far. This petition demands that we start making steps that are not reactionary, but well planned, well executed, and above all, equitable to as many students and faculty as possible. We do not feel that this can be achieved without involving teachers in the process.

There are teachers and faculty who supplement their salaries with summer employment, use the break to complete required "continuing education" credits, complete grants, participate in life altering community programs like Boys and Girls Clubs, and so many other great things. We have come to rely on this time to strengthen our craft and our community. Please sign this petition to ask Ralph Northam to call teachers to task; we want to be #InTheRoomWhereItHappens
