The use of plastics has been an epidemic for a very long time now. The production of plastic year after year has only increased. The best thing that we can do to reduce the production of plastic is to take measures that limit the demand. Plastic does not break down into organic material...it only reduces to micro plastics that not only hurt our environment but have found their way into our bodies and operate as endocrine disrupters. Recycling only does so much to help and is very important, but it is not enough. The production rate of plastic is still climbing. To make matters worse, plastic bags are not recyclable and only a small percentage of what we do recycle actually gets reused. Communities surrounding plants producing plastic have higher rates of cancer and other health risks. Our ecosystem is paying the price for the production of cheap convenience. No good comes from manufacturing chemicals. If we can take one step, get one store on board, then maybe we can get closer to a change before it’s too late.
