Ban the Buying and Selling Shark Fins in Virginia

Approximately 100 million sharks are killed every year specifically for their fins, which is a major cause of the world-wide decimation of shark populations. Shark finning is a barbaric practice in which sharks have their fins cut off while they are still alive, and are often thrown back to die an agonizing death.

Sharks are extremely important members of marine ecosystems, and help keep one of our greatest resources, the ocean, healthy and thriving. As a marine biologist and shark lover, I urge Governor Northam and the Virginia State Government to follow the examples set by Hawaii, California, Texas, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, Oregon, Washington, and Rhode Island, and make the buying and selling of shark fins in Virginia illegal.
