Ban Plastic Straws in Virginia

Do you know about the chaos plastic straws are causing to our ecosystem? Straws are a five minute luxury, but they can take up to one thousand years to decompose. I don’t think they should be used in restaurants in Virginia for a number of reasons. In the ocean, marine animals can mistake straws for food. Many species are becoming endangered because the plastic is killing them. Also, the straws have a lasting impact on our environment. Have you ever thought about where the straws go after you’re finished using them? If the straws go to a recycling bin, the get recycled, and used for other purposes. However, most straws are thrown out. These straws go to landfills, where they are left to decompose. There are also some straws that don’t end up in the recycling or the trash. These pose a threat to our environment. If you’re wondering what you can do to help the cause, there’s a number of steps you can take. The easiest thing to do is sign this petition (if you haven’t already!). You can also skip the straw. When you’re at a restaurant, request your drink without a straw. Another action that helps the cause is raising awareness. If you meet someone who always uses a straw, explain why they shouldn’t use it. There are alternatives to plastic straws as well. You’ve probably heard of paper straws. They are a great alternative, but are expensive, and also need trees to be produced. Some other alternatives are metal straws, glass straws, silicone straws, avocado straws, and even hay straws. If you agree with me on this matter, please sign and share this with other people to raise awareness. Thank you for taking time to read and respond.
