Citizenship with equal rights for Chakmas of Arunachal Pradesh
It‘s been over five decades, we were compelled to run away from our home in Chitagong Hill Tracts of the erstwhile East Pakistan due to brutal religious persecution and ethnic cleansing. We are immensely thankful to Govt. of India for providing shelter and refuge in this great country.
In fact, Chakmas were settled and rehabilitated permanently in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, India in the year 1964. As we were slowly recuperating the wounds of repercussions, we became victims of “Anti-Foreigner” movement of local tribal people.
State wide agitations to deport Chakmas were launched. The state government does not recognize Chakmas as the citizens of this land and deprived them of basic rights. Citizenship process of Chakmas was obstructed.
Finally after more than 25 years of legal battle in the apex court of the country, yesterday in a high profile meeting the government of India decided to grant Chakmas Citizenship BUT sans LAND RIGHTS.
Citizenship without land rights is no good for already deprived Chakmas, it will threatened their survival as they are 95 percent agrarian community and their situation will worsen.
Sign my petition and ask the Home ministry to grant Citizenship with equal rights to Chakmas of Arunachal Pradesh.
