Ban use of plastic bags in all major cities in India

Almost everyone in our country knows the impact and adverse effects of single-use plastics. They have a huge carbon footprint, most of them are not bio-degradable and they hurt every ecosystem that they are found in. Single-use plastics contribute to about 40% of the 5.6 million tons of plastic generated in the country, 70% of which is sent to the landfills. India currently ranks 12th among the countries with the largest mass of mismanaged plastic waste in the world.

While our government has taken steps towards sustainability, we are very far from our goals. Most of our water bodies are already polluted with plastic wastes and the problem is only going to get bigger while we struggle to manage the soon-to-be the largest population of the world.

Following the working model of Mumbai, I would like to start this petition for BJP to include the ban the use of plastic bags in all major cities in India in their election manifesto. The major cities include Hyderabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Vishakhapatnam, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Jaipur, Lucknow and all other cities whose population exceed by 1 million.

Plastic pollution of the oceans and water bodies isn't a faraway problem anymore. All of our major lakes and rivers are badly polluted with these materials. Even the water table is polluted and it affects our access to clean water. The affected marine life that ends up eating these pollutants has the potential to end up on our dinner plates, which is already happening in many parts of the world. While recycling is an initiative we have already taken, the reduction of plastic use is the most effective steps towards a sustainable future.

As the largest democracy in the world, we have the power to influence the government to bring in laws that protect our right to access clean water and environment. While this is just a start, this is a necessary step towards a sustainable future for our great nation.
