Amelia Keith started this petition to Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi and

This is a petition to allow professional counselors to provide services to Medicare clients, which would expand access to mental health and addiction treatment to America's seniors.

As of now, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Marriage and Family Therapist (MFTs) can bill private pay, Medicaid, but not Medicare. LPCs and MFTs are master level therapist trained to diagnose and treat mental illness through therapy. LPCs and MFTs are not listed as Medicare-covered providers despite having the education, training and practice rights equivalent to or greater than existing covered providers. According to suicide.org, the elderly make up about 13 percent of the U.S. population, but they account for about 18 percent of suicides. According to an article by the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, in 2015, substance abuse among those 60 and older was at around 17 percent of the population. The mental health of seniors need to be met.

Please sign this petition to show your support for LPCs and MFTs to be able to bill Medicare, so that America's seniors have greater access to the mental health care they need.
