Despite our efforts toward gender equality in western societies, places in the global south like India, continue to perpetuate gender inequality. Female infanticide is the intentional killing of female newborn babies. While we do not face social challenges like this in our community, we need to help put an end to gender inequality in other places, specifically in India. Due to intergenerational beliefs and the patriarchal society in India, girls are not given the same chances at life as boys are. Because of this, there is a burden placed on families who have daughters and on the daughters themselves. 

This burden causes much fear for women who are expecting a child because if it is a girl, the family and the baby will face many obstacles.  Moreover, this child might be unwanted and consequently, they might be abandoned, ostracized or worse, killed.

Did you know that there are 1-4 MILLION girls that go missing each year? That's roughly 3% of India's population...

These heartwrenching statistics don't end here. If India's patriarchy doesn't put an end to this social stratification, these numbers won't change and they could go up. This is an overwhelming issue, but it starts with raising awareness. Help raise awareness for female infanticide in India, we need to help change the social discourse.
