Raise Support for More Streetlights at the University of Rhode Island
Every year, almost 20 million Americans attend a college or university in the fall. Almost 12 million of them attend full time, and 60% of full time students live on campus or in university housing. Specifically, at URI, over 5,600 students live on campus. During the day, the campus is easy to navigate and full of people. At night, certain parts of campus become very dark and hidden, and can make residents feel unsafe. These students should feel safe and protected by this school.
College campuses can be dangerous places for residents. During their time enrolled, an alarming 13% of college students experience a form of sexual assault, and 5% experience stalking, according to some surveys (RAINN). The vast majority of these cases happen at night, and are harder to avoid with lack of visibility. Installing street lights on spots on URI’s campus where there are none already will boost the safety and security for URI students, staff and visitors.
Two places on campus stood out to us as students that would benefit from street lamps. The first is on Flagg Road, before the intersection with Plains Road and Tootell Road. Many commuter students park in Plains Lot, and therefore must either walk or take the Hill Climber to their car later in the evening. Not only is Flagg Road dark, but since it is on the edge of campus there aren’t as many people around at night. Walking there in the dark can be a dreaded experience for many.
The second location is on Ranger road, parallel to the center of the Quadrangle. This road is a heavily trafficked path for students who are walking from their dorms out to class and to Upper college road.
