The age of consent in Canada is 16. This means legally a 16 year old can engage in sexual relations with an adult of any age as long as there is no exploitation or relationship of trust. The age of consent was last raised in 2008 from 14-16 only after a 14 year old had engaged in relations with a 30 year old which gained much national attention. Lets fix this law before any drastic/unfortunate event has to take place as is usually the case for laws to change/be corrected
By signing this petition with your name and which riding you live in we will bring this forward to a bi-partisan group of MPs in Canada to change the law and raise the age to 18. There are current peer group laws that allow 14-15 year olds to engage with partners within less than a 5 year age gap, this would extend to 16 and 17 years olds. By raising the age of consent we can protect minors from predatory behaviour and close loop holes for inappropriate age gaps between adults and minors.
