Reopen the Fort Frances High School Cafeteria

Fort Frances High School is a secondary education institution in Northwestern Ontario with 800 students currently attending. Unfortunately, with no food services on site, students and staff are reliant on bringing their own lunches or leaving the property to eat, primarily at fast food restaurants. As students of Fort Frances High School who attend school 180 days a year and have to provide food for ourselves everyday from outside the school, we want to help bring back the cafeteria program. It could offer a variety of quick and healthy food choices for many students and staff.
A cafeteria program was in place until 2013 when the program was unfortunately shut down. It was closed because a number of obstacles left the program difficult to maintain. Due to our school’s location near a number of fast food restaurants, students have been influenced to choose their unhealthy options over the variety in the cafeteria. In addition, new policies were set in place for what can and cannot be served in a cafeteria. These policies were introduced in January 2010 and became effective September 2011 enforced by the Ontario Ministry of Education. This made it hard for the caterer running the program to continue their business. The policy made it hard for them to switch their menu to make food that followed the healthy eating guidelines and that students would like.
Numerous factors contributed to the closing of the cafeteria program. However, we believe that it could still be run along with the new Food and Beverage Policy. We believe that with the Rainy River District School Board’s help, along with the staff and student volunteers at Fort Frances High School, the cafeteria program could be made possible again.
After speaking with a few staff members and students at Fort Frances High School, we have concluded that almost everyone is in favour of our idea of reopening the cafeteria. Many benefits would include convenience for students and teachers to get their food quickly without leaving the school, healthy options that are not available at most fast food restaurants, and a place for visiting students and sports teams to go and get food while they are at the school.
We, along with our fellow students and staff of FFHS, would love to see the cafeteria up and running again. We ask that you please sign our petition to help us make this idea a reality in our school.
