Serenity Hogan started this petition to Raeford District Attorney and

TELL DISTRICT ATTORNEY MIKE HARDIN TO DROP THE UNCONSTITUTIONALLY BASED CHARGES AGAINST AN AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN.

Lanisha Jones, a Hoke County woman, is being prosecuted for voter fraud, a felony offense, by Hoke County District Attorney Mike Hardin. The odd thing about this charge is that there was no fraudulent activity. Mrs. Jones simply voted in the March 2016 primary while on probation. Mrs. Jones was never informed by the judge or her probation officer that voting while on probation was a strict liability felony crime. After being encouraged by her Pastor at Freedom Chapel AME Zion Church, to exercise her right to vote, Lanisha took action and got on the church van to do just that. Unfortunately, she was not aware that three years later, she would receive a knock at the door with a warrant for her arrest, for that simple act. After surviving a rocky past, Mrs. Jones was working hard to better her self. She moved to Wake County with her two girls, got married, found a church home, and was working toward getting a job promotion.

Now, three years later, Conservative Republican Prosecutor, Mike Hardin has chosen to prosecute her based on a Jim-Crow era law that was intended to disenfranchise African Americans. Even after receiving state official documents that suggested that Mrs. Jones may have illegally voted unintentionally, Hardin has still chosen to prosecute her. Majority of the District Attorneys in North Carolina, with cases similar to Mrs. Jones, have chosen to drop the charges, Hardin has however still chosen to prosecute Mrs.Jones. Lawmakers and government officials across North Carolina has chosen to update certain forms and change the way probationers are put on notice about voting ineligibility, Hardin has still chosen to prosecute Mrs. Jones.

There are three others in Hoke County being prosecuted for the same felony offense that carries a 19 month sentence, all of whom are African American. There are so many unsolved criminal cases in Hoke County, why has Mike Hardin chose to spend time and energy on a victimless, innocent crime?

Take a stand and demand answers now. Ask Mike Hardin why has he chosen to prosecute an African American woman on a racist based law. Before the time to re-elect a district attorney come back around in March 2020, demand answers.

Join us in demanding that Mike Hardin drop the charges against Mrs. Jones now.
