Sierra Club Southeast Gateway Group started this petition to Racine Unified School District

The Racine Unified School District purchased property to the east of Gifford School to expand the parking lot. The proposed site includes a grove of 28 large Burr Oak trees, each over one hundred years old. The current plan for the lot requires the removal of at least 21 of these irreplaceable trees. They are (literally) paving paradise to put up a parking lot!

We ask that the district revise this plan by moving the parking lot closer to the school for safety and convenience.

Taxpayer money saved by NOT removing these trees can be used to create a new plan that meets the following community demands:
1. Build a pick-up and drop-off area that will safely end congestion around the school.
2. Expand the parking area to be the right size for the school with new "visitor" parking spaces added near the school entrance.
3. Build the parking lots closer to the school, and away from the Oak trees.
4. Preserve all 28 Burr Oak trees on the northern part of the property for future generations.
