Rabbi Ulman: distance FREE Shul from Nazi protesters

We call on Rabbi Ulman to stop the dispute between the Friends of Refugees of Eastern Europe (FREE) Shul and Waverley Council from being hijacked by Nazis.

On August 13, far right Jewish activist, Avi Yemini, is planning to travel to Sydney with a cohort of far right and Nazi thugs - in their campaign of hate against Muslim Australians - to co-opt FREE shul's dispute regarding Waverly Council's refusal to grant approval for a new shul.

Neil Erikson, a known neo-Nazi and leader of the extremist right wing group United Patriots Front (UPF), urged his thousands of Australian Facebook followers to join him and Yemini at the protest.

In a video Erikson uploaded to Facebook, he labels Yemini and UPF protesters as common ‘patriots’ and invites his followers to come along to the protest.

With Yemini’s help, Erikson and other far-right thugs, are seizing a local Jewish community issue for a nationwide Nazi agenda.

Erikson, who has described himself as a ‘Hitlerite’ since he was 16, has two claims to fame: (1) motivated by antisemitism, Erikson stalked and sent death threats to Rabbi Dovid Gutnick, and (2) motivated by Islamophobia, Erikson staged a mock-beheading outside Bendigo Mosque with Blair Cottrell, the self-described ‘Fuhrer’ of the UPF.

We cannot allow Nazis into the heart of Jewish Sydney, and we cannot allow them to cynically exploit a Jewish issue in their campaign of hate.

Members of the Friends of Refugees of Eastern Europe shul may remember when Nazi soldiers marched into their homes in the 1940s.

Therefore, as the leader of the FREE shul, Rabbi Ulman must not remain silent in the face of this Nazi threat.

Rabbi Ulman must instead make a determined public effort to redirect the Jewish community towards a different healthy and efficient solution.

We call on Rabbi Ulman to reclaim this issue from Nazis looking to associate their cause with his, and to express his unequivocal condemnation of everything this hate protest represents.
