Quinte families want midwives to have full scope of practice

Midwifery care is a safe desirable choice for many families in the Quinte area. The Quinte Midwives practice was established in 2006. After some time our midwives were granted hospital privileges to continue offering prenatal care, birth support and postpartum care in Belleville General Hospital and Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital. The midwives scope of practice was immediately limited to spontaneous unmedicated births at Belleville General Hospital despite the fact that the College of Midwives of Ontario sets a much broader scope which includes inductions and augmentations, epidurals and vaginal births after cesarean. Many Quinte families and tax payers are unaware of our local limits and others have been patiently waiting for Quinte Health Care to grant Quinte Midwives their full scope of practice, so that families can continue to receive primary health care support during their birth by the health professionals who they have a previously established relationship with, who know not only their health history but their personal needs on all levels.
Quinte families and their supporters signed herein recognize that there are many situations which warrant a transfer of care for the safety of birthing persons and their babies. We request that our midwives be granted their full scope of practice at Belleville General Hospital so that we can receive personal, skilled and safe care by our health care practitioners who are working within their training and skill set.
When healthcare professionals practice to their full scope, we make best use of our resources and save tax dollars. When midwives are limited in their scope of practice, attending midwives still get paid for their clients births, but nurses and an obstetrician also get paid for the same birth. Not only are we using staff who may already be overworked and understaffed, but we are wasting dollars that could be better allocated to other areas in the healthcare system.
Please sign this petition and tell Quinte Health Care that you support a families right to choose midwifery care and to continue having midwifery care to their full scope of practice as recognized by the College of Midwives of Ontario, for the rights of birthing people and their families and to reduce the cost of birth in our community.
