Stop Violence against Women at Queensland University of Technology

This petition had 455 supporters

On 20th September 2012 during Student Guild elections Wayne Wang, a candidate on the ‘Epic’ ticket running for the position of Treasurer, punched a female student that was campaigning on an opposing ticket in the back of the head. The female student received a concussion and tissue damage to her left eye. Despite this, Wang was allowed to continue to campaign and has since been elected Treasurer of the Student Guild. His term starts December 2012.

It is unacceptable that a man who has committed violent behaviour against a woman should hold a position of power within the QUT Student Guild. Violence should never be tolerated and Wang is incapable of representing the interests of all QUT students.

We, the undersigned, call upon QUT and the Student Guild to support the right of every student to feel safe on campus and, as a gesture of upholding this right, remove Wayne Wang from the position of Treasurer.

As Wayne Wang has breached section E/2.1.4(e) of the QUT Manual of Policies and Procedures, we ask that the University take action in accordance with section E/8.1.
