Georgia Irwin started this petition to Queensland Health and

Mental Health services need improvement! Regional and Remote areas need more inpatient and outpatient services to protect and ensure our loved ones are supported and safe.

I’ve came to learn about the lack of mental health support and processes when my 15 year old niece attempted suicide by medication overdose 3 weeks ago. Her parents took her straight to the local public hospital emergency department where she admitted to taking a whole box of tablets to end her life. The medication had a serious effect on her body which required an admission into hospital to stabilise and return her vitals to normal. In her 4 day inpatient hospital stay she was seen briefly twice and not until day 3 by the child and youth mental health team (CYMS) who offered some tips on managing emotions. Upon discharge there was no action plan, no follow up, no medications, nothing given to her or her family to support her going back into the community.

Then again one week later same situation another attempted suicide attempt via medication overdose and within 3 hrs they were ready to discharge her with only having seen a mental health nurse and not getting any plans or support. It took us telling that clinician that we would call Ryan’s Rule if they didn’t get her the appropriate help, with that then came the Physch Reg who organised appropriate follow up and planning, but if we hadn’t been that upfront and demanding we could be in a much different situation today.

This lead to me wondering how many people suffering mental health problems get put in the too hard basket and discharged with no support. Since then I’ve spoken with a number of people who have told me harrowing stories of both adults and children not being supported adequately post discharge for a suicide attempt or a mental health admission. I’m looking for Queensland Health to better the system, improve the policies and procedures around mental health processes in particular child and youth mental health processes.

Did you know here in CQ there is not an after hours CYMS (child and youth mental) team? Where is the support for our children and youths that are struggling with mental health? We can do better and I’m asking CQHHS and Queensland Health to do better. I’m asking for a review of CQHHS and QLD Health policies and procedures relating to in particular management of teen suicide and self harm in emergency departments that also considers views of parents and community members. In addition, the lack of teen mental health inpatient services in the CQ region needs to be improved ASAP. We need to support and ensure our future is well supported here in CQ.

Please join me and voice your desire for a change to better the systems that should be there to support and protect the future generations and protect our children when their sick. In a world where Dolly’s Dream and “R U OK” are well known and more spoken about then ever before we should be able to deliver and give mental health more support then ever.

Thanks for reading and singing this petition to get action for the people who need us to stand up and fight for them.
