We implore the Queensland Government to defer the refurbishment of the Cairns Convention Centre until the completion of the 2020/21 National Basketball League season.
Refurbishment work to the Convention Centre has already been delayed over 12 months and is not expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2020/21 NBL season.
This leaves the Cairns Taipans without a venue for their home games. This would be a disaster for a small budget club, potentially leading to its demise.
It would also affect the whole NBL to lose another team.
This would mean the loss of Cairns' only professional sporting team devastating their loyal fan base.
It would also lead to loss of income and jobs to the surrounding businesses and the Convention Centre which have already been hit hard by the Corona virus regulations.
The Orange Army has made the Convention Centre a fortress where other teams feel intimidated and where they have the best per capita attendance in the NBL.
The Convention Centre is the only suitable venue in the region.
As the refurbishment has already been long delayed, we would like to request the Queensland Government to further defer the work until the end of the 2020/21 NBL season to allow the Cairns Taipans to survive.
