Pro Choice Queensland’s “It’s not 1899: abortion should not be a crime” petition demands action by the Queensland Parliament to repeal sections 224-226 of the Criminal Code (Qld) 1899 relating to abortion.
Queensland has some of the most restrictive laws in the country in relation to abortion, which remains a crime unless it is performed to prevent serious threat to the life or health of a woman.
Reliable opinion polling consistently shows that at least 80% of the Australian public support a woman's right to choose.
It is estimated that 14,000 women terminate a pregnancy every year in Queensland – not only those women, but also their doctors, could be deemed criminals under these laws.
The law was written 117 years ago, drafted from the 1861 UK ‘Offences Against the Person’ Act and today is preventing women in 2016 from making choices about their families, their bodies and their futures.
These laws in Queensland significantly impact on women's access to abortion, especially disadvantaged women and those living in rural or remote Queensland.
Abortion should not be a crime and should be removed as an offence from the Criminal Code (Qld) 1899.
