This petition is for a proposed amendment to the current Weddings Industry Covid Safe plan, prepared by the Restaurant and catering Association of Australia and submitted to the Queensland Chief Health officer Jeanette Young.
Currently the plan states, "Cake used for ceremonial cutting of cake should not be served to guests."

The inclusion of this statement in the Covid Safe plan prohibits couples and their guests from eating a traditionally displayed cake, unless it is encased in a sealed container.

Serving a cake that has been supplied by a registered and licensed business would pose no further risk of contracting COVID-19 than the function itself.

Guests are not required to wear PPE, nor is displayed cutlery or glassware required to be in individually sealed vessels.
The impact of this included COVID SAFE plan statement on Cake related businesses, Wedding clients and venues is great, with many couples are cancelling their cakes as they can no longer utilise them in the manner desired. This is resulting in further income losses from an already struggling industry sector.

The statement also disregards the already high hygiene practices and regulations that food businesses must adhere to. The chance of contracting COVID 19 through a cake is negligible.

Given function attendees are prohibited from mingling, the ceremonial cake would only be visible from the seated position, further ensuring any risk of COVID 19 contamination of the cake itself.
I am proposing that the COVID SAFE Weddings Industry plan be amended to enable cakes to once again be displayed as previously done so.
