Improve counselling services on Queen's University campus

The wait times for getting a counselling appointment at Queen's are long. Usually you have to wait between 1 to 3 weeks to get an appointment and even so you are only allowed a certain number of appointments per semester. The need for mental health care is overwhelming the system and it is time we do something about it. I am calling for an open discussion between students and University Administration to improve the counselling services on campus.

I have had personal experience with mental illness and I know what it is like to not be able to access help. So I am doing something about it.

Chances are you know someone who needs to access campus mental health resources as well, so what can you do about it? You can sign this petition and I will use it to lobby the AMS Student Government, Principle, and Wellness Services to do something about it.

The statistics on mental illness on University campuses is overwhelming, in a 2016 study published by OUCHA (Ontario University and College Health Association) CBC news reported that 65% of students reported feeling overwhelming anxiety and 46% reported feeling so depressed it was difficult to function (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/mental-health-ontario-campus-crisis-1.3771682 There are numerous options available and it is time we looked into them. One example that I have looked into is BEACON (https://www.mindbeacon.com/ which provides online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for an extremely low cost. I am calling for the University to look into this options as well as other potentials ways to solve this problem including hiring more counsellors. If we do not put more money and resources into counselling it could have devastating consequences.
