Julia Slaughter started this petition to Quassy Amusement & Waterpark

Quassy Amusement Park is located in the tight-knit community of Middlebury. This town and the surrounding area is home to hundreds of veterans, as well as diverse wildlife and many domestic pets. These three groups all suffer during fireworks displays.

I propose that Quassy replaces their fireworks display on the fourth of July with the laser light show they put on already for the Rockin Drive In Laser Light Show. This will be more environmentally friendly, unique, affordable, and will have a positive impact on the community. Read on to learn more about why you should sign!

Veterans suffering symptoms of PTSD find it difficult to get through the fourth of July because of all the fireworks. The noise can be very triggering and cause much stress and anxiety among this group of people who should be celebrated on our patriotic holiday, not ignored. Hundreds of veterans live in Middlebury and the surrounding towns. While many visitors from out of town may visit for the fireworks show at Quassy, it's those at home quietly sitting them out that suffer.

Middlebury is a town that loves its pets. Many people in my neighborhood are proud dog and cat owners. Research says that about half of all dogs display fear during fireworks, sometimes hiding, shaking and crying. There have been reports of dogs escaping, accidentally hurting themselves, and even dying from fright. Outside of driving them to the middle of nowhere for the fourth of July, there is no escape for animals from the bewildering and frightening sounds of fireworks.

Our town boasts a beautiful ecosystem teeming with healthy populations of wildlife including songbirds, hawks, owls, red foxes, coyotes and black bears, along with countless other types of birds, fish, reptiles and mammals. Some of this wildlife is even on the list of species of special concern for conservation such as the box turtle. Middlebury residents take pride in protecting our wildlife and our healthy forests. Each year, however, debris from fireworks contaminates our streams, rivers and lakes, potentially poisoning the fish in Lake Quassapaug and beyond. Let's not forget that early July is still baby season for wildlife. Reports of birds, squirrels and more that are injured or worse from explosions, burning hot debris and from fright pour in each year from animal rehabilitators. Babies and nests are often abandoned out of fear with devastating consequences. This does not reflect the ideals and care that our town pays upon our wild neighbors.

Many concerned people in our younger generations are now eschewing fireworks in the name of more eco-friendly options such as drone shows or laser light shows. These options are also less expensive and so much more exciting. It would not only be the thoughtful choice, but a popular one for Quassy's target demographic, to publicly choose a laser light show instead of fireworks - to protect our corner of the planet, our vets, our pets and our wildlife. Thank you!
