Amy Taylor started this petition to Quakertown Community School Board Kaylyn Mitchell

Dear Quakertown Community School Board,

My name is Matthew Esch.  I am currently a senior at Quakertown Community High School.  This past summer I have successfully enlisted into the United States Marine Corps.

My Fellow Poolees and I would like to ask you to reconsider your policy of not allowing students that have enlisted in the military to wear sashes or stoles depicting their chosen branch during the graduation ceremony.

Many other Pennsylvania school districts including our neighboring Pennridge have realized how important this is to their enlisted students and have changed this policy.

Graduation for me symbolizes a very exciting end to carefree childhood and the beginning of an incredible adventure. We have yet to actually go down to Marine Corps Recruit Training, however, this is a huge accomplishment to us.  Graduation should be a day that we will never forget and with us wearing our sashes proudly, it won’t be.

We are very proud to be leaving our families and friends behind to serve and protect our country, and we simply want to express ourselves.  Let’s not forget that it is thanks to those that serve that we have that right to free expression.

Thank You for taking the time to consider our request and we look forward to your response.
