Middle Eastern Inclusivity in Surveys and College Applications and Admissions

Middle Eastern Inclusivity in Surveys and College Applications and Admissions
We want to solve the exclusivity of middle eastern individuals in ad surveys and college admissions, as it misrepresents these people to be labeled as african american or white. Not only does it misrepresent these said individuals with whom have a large population in California and the US, but it misrepresents the students these colleges will be accepting and the data these surveys are collecting. This issue is often overlooked, and we must act on it. As a school girl from Egypt myself, it feels disrespectful and confusing when I don’t see the “Middle Eastern” option on a checklist, and many others agree. With enough people we can change this, as over the years these things have gotten a lot more inclusive- having Pacific Islander and Native American as options. With the help of enough people, I believe we can have a more inclusive, better represented environment for all. There are at least 10 million Middle eastern people in the United States alone, being misrepresented and incorrectly identified. In a UC article, they argue “According to the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, an executive agency that advises the President, the federal government classifies all people of Middle Eastern descent as white.” To say the least, Middle Easterners are in fact not white; and many individuals agree with me. We do not want to hide our ethnic roots and are in fact proud of them, and with your help- we can help represent millions across America.
