A REAL PROBLEM. The Alberta Government have announced that effective Spring 2023, they will be upgrading the driver's licenses of all Class 5 GDL drivers in Alberta to a full Class 5 driver's license WITHOUT A DRIVING TEST. The only conditions are that the GDL license holder is over 18 years of age and that they have held their GDL license for 2 years.

This means that over 500,000 untested drivers will become eligible to apply for a professional driver's license for driving small buses, taxis, and ambulances without having to take a driving test.

This is a very dangerous move. There is no way to implement such a change without creating a severe negative impact on road safety. It will inevitably result in a substantial increase in traffic collisions, fatalities, and an increase in motor vehicle insurance rates- particularly for young people.

Why is the Alberta Government doing this? Their stated intention is to cut red tape, reduce barriers to employment and cut costs for Albertans. 

The reality is that the outcomes of this reckless move will be disastrous and will cost Albertans a lot more than they could save from it.
