Due to the variants emerging from Covid-19 such as Omicron, Deltacron, Delta, and even new strains being discovered, many cases have been recorded for covid-19 just in this past month alone. We’ve reached the highest recording of covid cases in America ever with daily reports of 800,000+. To break that down for you that means every 12 seconds in one day, a new case of covid was recorded.

Many students at John Swett High School have gotten Covid from classmates, family members, and other forms of contact have allowed them to get infected with covid-19. Lots of students have also partaken in not going to school because of the anxiety that surrounds going to school during these difficult times.

A previous petition that was created titled “Close Down John Swett Unified School District Schools” has received over 120 signatures by concerned parents and students of the John Swett Unified School District. This exemplifies that many of us agree that shutting down our schools and going online would be the safest option.

We as the students of John Swett High School, are asking that the administration push back finals week for the sake of how many students have covid and are absent and also for the amount of kids that are not choosing to go to school because of the surge of cases locally and nationally. Due to contact tracing, many students also have to miss school for a couple of days until they are able to safely come back with a negative test results. It’s difficult for students to make up lesson and assignments that they’ve missed and some teachers have to go out of their way to record video lessons for the missing students.

We think it’s the best decision to push back finals week due to many students missing days of school and the lack of preparation for the upcoming finals week. It’s not just to students who have to miss out on finals week or finals prep week because of covid-19. The added of stress of finals with the anxiety of covid-19 will harm students and they will have harder time completing finals week.

Lastly, one thing that should be updated and reported at John Swett High School is the lack of sanitary care for the students. Many bathrooms do not have soap dispensers or an efficient about  of soap in each one that are essential to staying safe and clean during the pandemic. These dispensers have been out since last year and have not yet been replaced.

We hope you can carefully read this message and make a through decision that will help benefit us all and the current situation we are in.
