The COVID-19 pandemic has been playing on for months now. The more we continue to learn about SARS-CoV-2, the better we should be at handling it. Throughout the past few months, we've learned about the importance of social distancing and wearing masks when out in public. Both these measures effectively help prevent the spread of this virus, but despite this, the virus still spreads.

With the majority of Purdue’s population being below the age of 25, the virus will spread, and it will spread under the radar with many students not experiencing any symptoms. This is what makes the virus so incredibly dangerous; a person can transmit the virus, without ever knowing they have it. This only emphasizes the importance of testing students regularly. If the university only plans to test students when symptoms are present, the virus will have already reached other people. Especially with the openness of Purdue’s campus, students and faculty are always interacting with the Lafayette community. Testing everyone once before arriving on campus is simply not enough to protect the community for the entire semester. Regular testing of everyone, assures that Purdue is being proactive, and not falling behind when it comes to slowing the spread of the virus.

To best protect the Purdue community, testing needs to be conducted for every student regularly. Faculty are older and more vulnerable to severe illness as a result of the virus. Students are young, and with healthy immune systems, can carry the virus without knowing. Testing removes the unknown and allows Purdue to isolate positive cases early before severe spread occurs on campus. If Purdue plans to keep the number of infections low, they need to have a high level of testing to achieve it.
