Students Against EdTPA: Accommodations Need to be Made

We are currently students enrolled in the Education program at Purdue University Northwest. We are within months of achieving our degree and are on our way to become future educators. However, the School of Education and Counseling is standing in the way of our completion.

Recently, Purdue University Calumet and Purdue University North Central has unified into one campus, thus named Purdue Northwest. When the unification happened, a brochure was released stating that current students enrolled within a program will not experience a change in their curriculum, course work, or graduation requirements, nor will they be required to travel between the campuses. Well, during our last semester, of all things, they are now trying to implement a change.

This change, otherwise known as the EdTPA, is requiring us to attend 6 mandatory night seminars, 3 at the Hammond campus and 3 at the Westville campus. Not only are we having to attend these seminars after spending a full day student teaching, we are not being graded on the EdTPA. The program is being "piloted" so, basically, we are just guinea pigs to see if the program works.

Many of us have been impacted by this decision as it is highly inconvenient. Not only were current students given one weeks notice about these seminars,  but it is also impacting our daily lives as we have other obligations such as family, work, religious reasons, and location. We have come together and tried to ask for a change in location and time or, at the least, an accommodation for those who cannot attend. However, our demands and concerns are being ignored.

Therefore, we have created a petition to show that we will not give up. We demand a change in location and time and demand some accommodations. If these cannot be meant, we demand for the EdTPA to be implemented at a later time.

This is our graduation, our lives, our career, and our future. Help us in succeeding a change.
