The Wounded Knee Massacre site is up for sale by a private owner, James Czywczynski, who is non-Native. Ownership of this land was stripped from the people of Pine Ridge by the Dawes Act of 1887. At that time, a formal sovereign government did not exist and Pine Ridge was unable to resist assimilation, a process that ultimately divided land into individual allotments and sold the remainder as "excess" to non-Indians like Mr. Czywczynski. He wants $4.9 million dollars for the land, even though its assessed value is $14,000 and it's sacred value to the Oglalla Sioux Trib is non-negotiable. This land should have never been taken from the Native People in the first place. To suggest that it is "for sale" is outrageous. Purchase the land and restore it to the rightful owners.
