On Friday October 25th, Publix Super Markets announced their intention to imminently close their store located in the Gateway Plaza on Norwood Avenue on the Northside of Jacksonville. This store is the only quality grocery store in the area where neighborhood residents can reliably expect to find fresh produce and healthy choices. In closing this store, the some surrounding portions of Brentwood and Norwood will become food deserts.

Further, this location is a key employer for many neighborhood residents and while the store has pledged to offer employment at other locations, the reality of Jacksonville's massive and often inefficient public transit system will mean these workers will have to make a great sacrifice to pursue employment in other communities if they take this offer.

This store is always busy and is a hub a neighborhood activity. Girl Scouts and football teams host fundraisers outside the store and many neighbors enjoy the weekly ritual of seeing one another at this central location.

Furthermore, the choice to close this particular location is a slap in the face to our under-served community. It serves as yet another reminder on the part of those in positions of power that our neighborhood is less-valued, less-seen, and less-important than other communities within our city. Conversely, choosing to reverse this decision would be an act that could positively demonstrate the value, worth, and dignity of our community!
