Why this petition matters

Started by Brian Purcell

We the undersigned are asking Publix, Walmart, Foodlion & Kroger to give non-profits like The WAY an opportunity to receive donated food. Currently Feedmore/Feeding America has a contract with each of these stores to receive all their food donated food.

The WAY is a non profit that also helps provide food for those in need. They focus on the low income elderly (who receive between $14.00-$40.00 a month in food stamps), the homeless veterans who are transitioning out of homelessness and the children who are foster/orphan as well as anyone else who needs food assistance. Outside of the elderly, veterans and children The WAY requires those in need of food assistance (those that are able to) to volunteer 1 hr in exchange for a bag of food. They do this so that they can help each person in need with more than just food. While volunteering they get to know each person and for those who are in need of employment, education, housing and other resources they make sure they leave with that help on top of the food. They can do this 5 days a week. The WAY is doing its part to not create dependency but to help everyone in need to become independent and self-sufficient. They also offer employment to those who need to earn money to pay a bill, fines or etc.

Feedmore/Feeding America controls most of the food donations giving to help feed the hungry in the United States. In order to receive food donations to give to those in need a non-profit organization is expected  to be part of Feedmore/Feeding America. To become a part of Feedmore/Feeding America a non-profit organization must pay a yearly fee, and you must agree to purchase donated canned goods and meats from them every month. Partner agencies are not able to ask for any type of service or barter from the receiving parties. Partner agencies are to give the food to anyone without any restrictions.

A recent story was done on a situation between Kroger, Feedmore and The WAY(click link below for full story). In the story Mr. Pick the President and CEO of Feedmore called The WAY a disruptor to their way of doing things. The WAY does offer a different way of helping people because they do not want to create dependency but want to really help people become independent and self-sufficient.

This petition is to ask Grocery store chains to give non-profits like The WAY an opportunity to receive donated food. Feedmore should not have total control of all donated food from every grocery store chain. There is more than one way to help those in need and Feedmore should not be allowed to say they have the only way of feeding the hungry. I am asking Grocery stores to meet with me (Brian Purcell) to talk about how The WAY is helping people and how we are changing lives. The WAY may be a disruption to Feedmore but we are doing something different because we want to see different in our society and for the generation to come.

If you would like to contact The WAY our email is thewayoutreach@hotmail.com and our phone number is (804)737-3300.
