With the increase in the number of celebrity and retailer book clubs, there has also been an increased push in branding new releases with these stickers. Lately, the majority have been printed directly onto the front cover. The implication of a white celebrity-helmed book club as authorities if worthy BIPOC stories and voices raises several concerns. Specifically,

“The marketing and publishing teams are choosing white celebrity voices to promote a BIPOC authored book in the hopes to sell more books. Do you doubt the capital of Black celebrity? Do you doubt the power of Black voices for promotion? Who are you marketing to?” - @_itslitbooks_

There is nothing the Bookstagram community loves more than posting pictures of books we’re excited about and liking & sharing each other’s content. But, honestly guys, nothing ruins these shots more than a huge, clashing book club sticker marring up the beautiful cover art.  None of these stickers were incorporated in the original cover design, so they look incredibly out of place.

People who have pre-ordered books are receiving their first printing editions with these stickers printed directly onto the cover. Online retailers are displaying covers of books free of these brandings, but are shipping out ones that include them. Many brick and mortar stores only have the book club copies in stock. All we are asking for is that consumers be given the option to opt-out of these marketing ploys, by either returning to actual stickers or having an option to buy a copy without one.

Please stop putting un-removable stickers directly on the covers of books.
