Overnight yesterday, about 100 trees and shrubs were razed down by the Public Works Department workers at Kotturpuram tree park, Chennai. This was done in order to build a road. Some of them were rare species, nurtured for over ten years.

The trees were mowed down with a JCB without consulting the custodians of the park, namely 'Nizhal' and 'Friends of KTP'.

KTP is a leading example of restoration ecology in urban spaces as a community effort. It is also used by hundreds of people for walking and relaxation activities. Various schools around the city bring their classes here to create learning experiences around trees and nature. Routine tree walks and workshops for public are also conducted. KTP is an important lung space and Biodiversity spot in Chennai.

Please sign this petition to condemn this heedless act of the PWD and to demand reparation.
