The United States Military is known for targeting low income districts, schools, and students for recruitment. They manipulate young and impressionable kids into joining the military using scare tactics. They market to poor, immigrant born, low GPA teenagers because the armed services need a larger population. The sooner young people join, the likelihood of them "building a career" increases. They sell college and free housing to students like candy. Can't pay for college or a house? Can't get a job? Join us! They also sell possible citizenship to immigrants. This inherently glamorizes the military. There's also an incentive to enlisting. You can accrue up to $6,000 through the Army's Future Soldiers program.

JROTC is federally funded and sponsored program that operates in both public and private schools. It's disguised as a character development and behavioral mentoring program. Their program also teaches children as young as 13 to shoot weapons classified by the army as lethal weapons. JROTC is a disguise for recruitment in schools. Children, teens, young adults are far too young to be making decisions put in their heads by exploitative older adults pushing the narrative that they are better off serving the country than anywhere else. Without JROTC, we could be funding the rest of school programs and social work.

To further my argument, I will give you some personal experiences of mine. In 10th grade i went to Scarborough High School. The summer before, they spent all their money on a building designed mostly for the JROTC program. A social worker/counselor I had a bond and trust with told me that they might not have the same program and he'd have to leave elsewhere because of lack of funding. Anyone who he's helped would be stripped of a safe place because funding was being used elsewhere. JROTC and Military is not a necessity, but social workers are. Another experience. I was sent to an alternative school for some time called DAEP. They had recruiters every week. I signed up to get into a job hiring program one day, and they told me that KFC regional managers make $68,000. Later that day, the Navy came to talk to us about recruiting and all the amazing benefits and pay. They told us they get paid $34,000. I told everyone at my table that KFC regional managers make twice as much as the Navy and that I thought it was ridiculous. The recruiters told me since my father was a pilot, I should join the airforce. Without saying it directly, they insinuated that it would be my best bet considering my troubled past, my family's income, and the neighborhood I live in; that choosing military over a normal job would be easier because a normal job would not see past anything else. It's very important to me that people like me are no longer manipulated by the military.

May I add my condolences for Vanessa Guillen's family and friends. May her kind and loving soul rest in peace, and justice be served.
