As a nurse working in the NHS, I strongly believe that surgical masks  are not effective against transmission of droplets (Covid-19).

Having read through few research materials from the past years and also with the learning while at  university, it is clear that human cough or sneeze generates aerosols of various sizes. The surgical masks are not an effective physical barrier to stop aerosols of smaller sizes. Now, Public Health England guideline covers only the Aerosol Generating human procedures (i.e, tracheostomy, intubation, suctioning, bronchoscopy etc) as the criteria for using a FFP3 masks/N95.  NHS Trusts' policies are based on these recommendations by the Public Health England. Therefore, NHS Trusts' policies cannot be questioned. During the past few weeks, I also noticed that the Public Health guidelines changed according to the supply issues and not based on the scientific evidences.

Most of the doctors, nurses and carers come in close contact with the patients while examining, providing treatment  or care.

These frontline workers are also having vulnerable people in their families. So the present guideline is putting the staff and their families who are risking their lives, at more danger.

My plea is that it is important to provide FFP3 masks/ respirators to staff who come in close contact with the patients, to keep the staff, their families and also other patients at low risk. Qualified staff falling ill leads to shortage of staff, thereby putting lives of patients at risk, especially in the NHS.
