Puay Chai 2 (“PC2”) has proposed holding a virtual graduation ceremony for the graduating class of 2020. I understand this is a great effort from the school but I feel it may not be sufficient to mark this momentous milestone in our children’s lives. I am proposing that we come together as parents, students and teachers to agree on a better alternative to a virtual ceremony, one that, while still adhering to social distancing rules and government regulations, does not compromise on the importance and gravitas of a graduation ceremony.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic this year, many students have been stripped off their right to attend their graduation. The pandemic has caused many graduations to be replaced by virtual, drive-in and other alternative ceremonies. Most of these ceremonies unfortunately may not fulfil the main purpose of a graduation ceremony, as an event to mark a momentous junction in our kids’ academic life and formative years.A proper graduation ceremony allows our kids the chance to give thanks to their dedicated teachers, to say goodbye to their good friends, and to have some well-deserved fun to mark the end of their primary school years. As a parent, I remember fondly how proud I was to see my child graduate even from kindergarten, and the joy in their faces when they collected their scrolls, throwing their mortar boards into the air. I am sure you will agree with me that our kids grow up too quickly, and I for one would want to create as many precious childhood memories as I could with them, and for them.

I understand that the school and the teachers are all working diligently to prepare for an alternative substitution to a formal graduation, and by no means do we want to diminish their efforts in trying to ensure that the students get a ceremony. I appreciate every endeavour that the teachers have put in, for our children’s best interest.

However, I believe that there may be a better solution. I would like to urge the administrators of PC2 to consider strongly to postponing the graduation ceremony to next year, when restrictions are lifted and it is safe again to organise a proper ceremony with the right safeguards in place. I hope that with the collective support of all the parents, teachers and students, we can come together in a cohesive unit to plan an in-person graduation for our deserving students and children . Please take 30 seconds to fill this petition to show your support, and to show your children and students that you are proud of them.
