Request PSU to offer postponed Commencement Ceremony for Class of 2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, PSU has decided not to host an in-person commencement ceremony for the graduating class of 2020 and they have instead opted to host a 'virtual ceremony' in June. We understand that sacrifices must be made for the greater good of the community, and we support the effort of the PSU administration to preserve our collective health; however, we believe that an online commencement ceremony will inevitably fall short of its function as an important rite of passage and the ultimate celebration of our academic achievements.

Many of us have been students for four years, and some even longer. The commencement ceremony is a celebration of this effort, both for the individual and for family members and loved ones who have watched and encouraged us to reach this goal. And as students, we want to be able to share this moment with these loved ones. A virtual commencement simply does not, and can not, hold the same gravitas as a traditional ceremony.

We are asking PSU Interim President Stephen Percy, and all other administrators who are capable of acting in our favor, to grant us their assurance that they will offer an in-person commencement ceremony for the Class of 2020 if and when it becomes safe again to do so.

If you are a student, family member, or friend of a member of Class of 2020, we ask you to sign this petition so that we may celebrate our graduation in person, with all of our friends and loved ones, and with all of the proprieties associated, whenever it becomes safe to do so.
