Children are not getting enough sleep at night, which in turn adds frustrations to the parents who have to deal with them. It also lessens the amount of time left over for parents to spend with their children.
Our child is starting kindergarten at PS 58 in the fall, and while it appears that this doesn't affect the kindergarten start time, it will certainly affect us the following year. We wholeheartedly agree with the petitioner that 8:00 a.m. is an inappropriately early start time and places an undue burden on working parents. We strongly urge the school to reconsider.
I do think parents should be consulted about a big change in the daily schedule like this. I'll add my voice to the choir: all the parents' job will not also be starting and ending 40 minutes earlier, so that means less time with kids every day, earlier wake-up time for all, more tired kids and parents, more childcare costs for those of us who work till 5 or 6 in the evening. Thanks for considering this petition.
