Recognize Labor Day at Bard College at Simon's Rock
Simon's Rock does not currently recognize Labor Day in any capacity I, as a student, am aware of.
Simon’s Rock could use this important holiday as an opportunity not only to educate students about the history of unions and labor organization in America, but also to celebrate the many workers who learn and work at our school. Faculty, as well as staff who work in campus life, physical plant, dining, campus safety, wellness, marketing, financial departments, IT services, library services, admissions, and at the Kilpatrick Athletic Center, are all represented by this day. So are students who are employed by the school in various roles, as well as those who work part-time outside of school, often to pay for their education here.
Other than those who work and live on this campus, Labor Day could also be used to celebrate our parents, siblings, family members and friends who are laborers.
Instead, Simon’s Rock does not recognize Labor Day, and does not even use the day to spread awareness about the important traditions it represents.
I call on Provost Weinstein and upper administration to take appropriate action to recognize this important holiday, and use the occasion to celebrate the workers who built this school, and continue to enable its day-to-day operation.
