Conserve Mount Allison's Academic Integrity: Preserve the role of University Librarian

As members of the Mount Allison community and shareholders in its success, we  would like to express our dismay at the impending elimination of a University Librarian for the Ralph Pickard Bell Library, a move unprecedented in Canadian universities.

As proposed by the Provost's Decanal restructuring, the replacement of the University Librarian with an HR Manager - someone who is not a professional librarian and, as such, lacks both experience and scholarship in academic librarianship - poses an immediate threat to both Mount Allison's academic integrity and reputation as a high-ranking academic institution. The University Librarian plays a crucial role in ensuring that the Libraries and Archives of Mount Allison meet the needs of students and faculty. This individual also represents Mount Allison's library on both national and regional committees exclusively composed of professional librarians, as per standard university practices in Canada.

While we appreciate the Provost's efforts to streamline the university's administration, we take issue with the proposal's move to replace an academic librarian such the University Librarian with a purely administrative position.

We recognize and reaffirm the Library Council's motion, carried unanimously on January 12 2018, resolving that "(...) there continue to be a University Librarian who is a professional librarian with demonstrated broad knowledge and understanding of current issues and scholarship in academic librarianship (...)" responsible for managing the Ralph Pickard Bell Library.

We are officially and formally responding to Dr. Jeff Ollerhead's proposal with a petition that the office of the Provost ensure that Mount Allison's Libraries and Archives continue to uphold the standard practice of Canadian universities - we ask that the position of University Librarian be preserved in its current form.
